With the aim to strengthen international academic exchange and the opportunities to cooperate with internationally renowned universities, and to broaden our students’ opportunities to study and enjoy exchange opportunities overseas, our Institute invited Professor Vijay K. Dhir, Dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of California Los Angeles, to visit MPI again in March 2015.

The intentions behind this visit were for the two institutions to further discuss the possibilities for establishing an exchange of scholars, as well as opportunities for collaboration in various areas of education and research.

Professor Dhir appreciated that MPI is the first higher education institution in Macao to have undergone a successful institutional review conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, a UK quality assurance agency of international standing. The quality of MPI’s teaching and management is internationally recognised.

Our Vice President, Professor Yin Lei, remarked that the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of UCLA had established a mechanism for reciprocal visits and academic exchange with MPI for years, leading to excellent results from cooperative projects in teaching and research. Professor Lei also noted that the joint research centre of the two institutions was built at the headquarters of MPI in 2010, which, through smooth cooperation, had produced fruitful outcomes in research relating to computer networks. The programme of Master of Science in Engineering is offered by University of California, Los Angeles, in collaboration with Macao Polytechnic Institute. This program was ranked No.1 among the same kind of programs of the U.S. in 2015.

Apart from inspecting the software and hardware of our Computing Programme, Professor Dhir briefed our students of the programme about the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, shared their vision, and interacted with the students. The students were greatly interested in UCLA and the relevant programmes and posed questions enthusiastically. Over the past several years, a number of our graduates pursed their further study at UCLA as well. Prof. Dhir was welcomed by our ESAP director Dr. Marcus Im and Head of AAD Dr. Vivian Lei.

Vijay K. Dhir, distinguished professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering, was named dean of UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science in March 2003. In 2006, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering – among the highest honors awarded to engineers – for his work in boiling heat transfer and nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics and safety. Dhir received the 2004 Max Jakob Memorial Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). He is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society and a fellow and honorary member of ASME.

The Computing Programme has successfully achieved higher education academic accreditation granted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in 2011. Macao Polytechnic Institute’s mission is grounded in the interdependent relationship between teaching and research. Our research and development efforts are primarily focused on: wireless technology, network security, artificial intelligence, multimedia and gaming technology.
